This guide will walk you through how to safely open the back cover and complete the iPhone 14 Plus battery replacement. If your phone is draining too quickly or displaying inaccurate battery levels, refer to this guide to restore your device to optimal condition.
Safety Warnings
-
Battery Discharge: Before beginning the repair, ensure you discharge your iPhone's battery below 25% and power off the phone. A fully charged lithium-ion battery can easily catch fire or explode if accidentally punctured during disassembly.
-
Swollen Battery: If your old battery is swollen, please leave the repair to a professional.
-
Damage Prevention Warning: The charging coil cable for the iPhone 14 Plus is located on the right side of the device (near the volume buttons). Do not insert your opening pick too deeply when slicing the adhesive.
-
Broken Glass: If the back glass is severely cracked, cover it with clear packing tape to prevent glass shards from flying or causing injury.
Detailed Disassembly & Replacement Steps
Part 1: Opening the Phone
Step 1: Remove the Pentalobe Screws
Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws located on either side of the bottom charging port (Lightning port).
Step 2: Heat the Back Cover
Use a hairdryer to evenly heat the bottom edge and perimeter of the iPhone 14 Plus back cover for about 1 minute. This will soften the waterproof adhesive seal inside. (Note: Heat only until it is warm to the touch, not too hot.)
Step 3: Lift and Create a Gap
- Apply a suction cup to the lower edge of the back glass.
- Pull up firmly and steadily on the suction cup until a small gap appears between the back cover and the metal frame.
- Insert an opening pick into the gap.
Step 4: Slice the Perimeter Waterproof Adhesive
- Slide the pick along the bottom edge of the phone to cut the bottom adhesive.
- Continue sliding the pick along the left, right, and top edges of the phone. If you encounter resistance and it feels difficult to cut, reheat that area.
(Warning: Do not insert the pick deeper than 3 mm to avoid severing the internal flex cables.)
Step 5: Open the Back Cover Like a Book
Once the adhesive around the perimeter is completely severed, open the back glass from left to right (using the volume button side as a hinge) just like opening a book.
(Warning: Never pull the back cover completely off, as it is still connected to the motherboard by flex cables. Find a small box to use as a prop to support the back cover.)
Part 2: Removing the Back Cover
Step 6: Remove the Battery Connector Cover
- Use a Y000 tri-point screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the battery connector cover.
- Use tweezers to lift off the metal shield.
Step 7: Disconnect the Battery
- Use the pointed end of a plastic spudger to gently pry up and disconnect the battery flex cable connector from its socket on the motherboard.
- Bend the disconnected cable slightly outward to ensure it does not accidentally spring back, touch the socket, and provide power.
Step 8: Remove the Back Cover Connector Cover
- Use a Y000 tri-point screwdriver to remove the single screw securing the back cover connector cover.
- Use tweezers to lift off the metal shield.
Step 9: Disconnect the Back Cover Flex Cable
Use a plastic spudger to disconnect the back cover flex cable, which connects components like the wireless charging coil.
Step 10: Remove the Back Cover
At this point, you can completely remove the back glass and set it aside safely.
Part 3: Removing the Old Battery
Note: The iPhone 14 Plus battery is secured inside the chassis by two stretch-release adhesive strips at the top edge. (Step numbers adjusted below for sequential clarity).
Step 11: Peel Back the Adhesive Pull Tabs
Use tweezers to locate and carefully peel back the black stretch-release adhesive pull tabs on the top edge of the battery.
Step 12: Slowly Pull Out the Adhesive
Pinch one of the pull tabs with your fingers, keep it parallel to the phone and as close to horizontal as possible, and slowly, steadily pull the adhesive strip out.
(Tip: Never pull upwards, or the strip is highly likely to snap. Maintain an even tension until the entire strip slides out completely. Repeat this process for all strips.)
Step 13: Remove the Battery
If all stretch-release strips have been successfully pulled out, the battery can be easily removed.
(Backup plan: If an adhesive strip accidentally snaps and cannot be pulled out, apply a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol (90%+) along the edge of the battery. Wait 1-2 minutes for the adhesive to dissolve, then use a plastic card or spudger to extremely gently pry the battery up from the bottom. Never use metal tools to forcefully pry it!)
Part 4: Reassembly Tips
- Clean: Use a lint-free cloth and a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to clean any remaining old adhesive inside the chassis.
- Apply New Adhesive: Attach the matching battery adhesive strips (stretch-release adhesive) to the back of the new battery.
- Positioning: Place the new battery into the battery compartment and press it down to secure it (do not connect the battery flex cable just yet).
- Connect: Bring the back cover over. Connect the back cover flex cable first, and as the final step, snap on the new battery's flex cable connector.
- Seal: Screw the metal covers back on, clean the old adhesive from the frame, and apply a new iPhone 14 Plus waterproof seal.
- Close the Cover: Align and close the back cover, press down firmly around all edges, and finally, tighten the two Pentalobe screws at the bottom.
