If the back glass of your iPhone 15 Pro Max is cracked or the wireless charging function is not working properly, you can follow this guide to replace the back glass yourself.
⚠️ Preparation Before Repair and Important Warnings
Discharge the battery:
Before starting the repair, make sure your iPhone battery level is below 25%. Accidentally puncturing a charged battery during repair may cause a fire or explosion.
Protect the glass:
If the back glass is severely cracked, apply clear tape over the surface. This helps prevent loose glass shards from causing injury and allows the suction cup to maintain a secure grip.
Phase 1: Opening the Phone
Step 1: Remove the Bottom Screws
Use a pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two screws located on both sides of the charging port.
Step 2: Heat the Edges of the Back Glass
Use a heat gun to warm the edges of the back glass for approximately 1–2 minutes. This softens the waterproof adhesive securing the back cover, making it easier to remove.
Step 3: Create a Gap
Attach a suction cup with a handle to the bottom edge of the back glass.
Apply steady upward force on the handle to create a gap between the back glass panel and the frame.
Step 4: Cut Through the Adhesive
Insert the tip of a pry pick into the gap.
Note: When working with the adhesive in the following steps, pay attention to the wireless charging cable near the volume buttons.
Heat the right edge of the back glass, then insert another pick to cut through the adhesive along that side.
Repeat the heating and cutting process for the top and left edges.
Step 5: Open the Back Glass
Gently swing the back glass open toward the right side, using the right edge of the phone as a hinge.
Note: If the back glass still cannot be opened, return to the previous steps and check whether any adhesive or clips are still holding it in place.
Rest the back glass against a box or similar object to prevent stretching or damaging the connecting cables.
Phase 2: Removing the Back Glass
Step 6: Remove the Protective Cover
Use a screwdriver to remove the screws.
Remove the cover that secures the wireless charging connector cable.
Step 7: Disconnect the Charging Coil
Use the tip of a spudger to gently lift and disconnect the wireless charging coil press connector.
Step 8: Remove the Back Glass
After disconnecting the cable, the old back glass assembly can be completely separated and removed.
Phase 3: Cleaning and Reassembly
Step 9: Clean the Frame
Use tweezers and a spudger to remove all remaining old adhesive from the phone's metal frame.
Wipe the edges with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol to ensure the surface is completely clean and smooth.
Step 10: Reassembly
Align and apply the new waterproof adhesive seal to the cleaned frame, then remove the top protective backing layer.
Reconnect the flexible cable from the new back glass to the motherboard, then reinstall the metal protective cover and screws.
Close the back cover and firmly press along all edges to ensure the adhesive forms a complete seal.
Reinstall the two bottom pentalobe screws.
When your iPhone 15 Pro Max starts showing signs of aging—such as reduced battery life or unexpected shutdowns—replacing your iPhone 15 Pro Max battery is the most cost-effective way to restore its full functionality.
⚠️ Important Notes
- Discharge the Battery: Before starting the repair, make sure your iPhone battery level is below 25%. Accidentally puncturing a charged battery during the repair process can cause a fire or explosion.
- Safety Warning: If your battery is already swollen, it is strongly recommended to take it to a professional repair technician.
- Screen Protection: If your screen glass is severely cracked, cover the surface with clear tape. This prevents flying glass splinters from causing injury and ensures the suction cup can grip securely.
- Organize Parts: Keep all disassembled parts properly organized during the repair to ensure they go back into their original locations. Pay special attention to the screws; driving a screw into the wrong hole can easily damage other components.
Phase 1: Opening the Phone
Step 1: Remove the Bottom Screws
Use a pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two screws located on either side of the charging port.
Step 2: Heat the Screen
Heat the bottom edge of the screen with a hair dryer until it feels hot to the touch to soften the internal waterproof adhesive.
Step 3: Create a Gap
-
Apply the suction cup to the bottom edge of the screen.
-
Pull up on the handle with firm, steady force to create a gap between the screen and the frame.
Step 4: Insert the Opening Pick and Cut the Adhesive
⚠️ WARNING: Do not insert the pry tool deeper than 3 mm to avoid damaging internal flex cables and spring contacts.
-
Insert the tip of an opening pick into the gap.
-
Heat the right edge to soften the adhesive, insert another opening pick into the bottom-right corner, and slide it to cut the adhesive.
-
Continue heating the left and top edges of the phone, using picks to cut through the adhesive sequentially.
Step 5: Open the Screen
-
Open the screen from right to left like opening a book cover (the flex cables are located on the left).
-
Do not fully detach the screen yet. You can lean the screen against a box to prevent strain or damage to the cables.
Phase 2: Removing the Screen
Step 6: Remove the Internal Metal Bracket
-
Use a screwdriver to remove the six screws securing the motherboard cover.
-
Carefully remove the metal bracket using tweezers.
Step 7: Disconnect the Battery
Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the battery connector from the logic board.
Step 8: Disconnect the Screen and Sensors
-
Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the screen cable connector.
-
Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the sensor cable connector.
Step 9: Remove the Screen
You can now fully detach the screen assembly and set it aside in a safe place.
Phase 3: Removing the Speaker and Taptic Engine
For safe and convenient removal of the adhesive strips and battery, it is highly recommended to remove the bottom speaker and Taptic Engine first. If you are experienced, you can also attempt to dissolve the adhesive using high-concentration isopropyl alcohol to pry the battery out directly.
Step 10: Remove the Bottom Speaker
-
Unscrew the four Phillips screws securing the speaker.
-
Carefully lift out and remove the speaker from the phone.
Step 11: Remove the Taptic Engine
1. Use a spudger to disconnect the Taptic Engine flex cable from its socket.
2. Remove the two screws securing the Taptic Engine.
3. Remove the Taptic Engine from the enclosure.
Phase 4: Removing the Old Battery
Step 12: Pull Out the Battery Adhesive Strips
-
Carefully peel back the black pull-tabs at the top and bottom of the battery adhesive strips using tweezers.
-
Grab the pull-tabs and pull the adhesive strips outward, keeping the pull angle as flat and parallel to the phone as possible. Pull slowly and steadily.
Step 13: Handling Broken Adhesive Strips (Alternative Method)
-
If an adhesive strip breaks and cannot be retrieved with tweezers, NEVER use sharp metal tools to pry out the battery!
-
Apply a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol into the gaps around the battery. Tilt the phone slightly to let the alcohol dissolve the adhesive.
-
Insert a triangular opening pick beneath the bottom of the battery, gently pry up the old battery, and remove it.
Phase 5: Cleaning and Reassembly
Step 14: Clean the Frame
-
Use isopropyl alcohol (90% concentration or higher) and a microfiber cloth to clean off any adhesive residue inside the phone housing, ensuring a clean and flat surface.
-
Apply a new frame waterproof adhesive seal. Do not peel off the protective film just yet.
Step 15: Testing
-
Reconnect the screen and battery, then turn on the device to perform a functional test.
-
Once you confirm everything works properly, power off the phone and disconnect the cables again.
Step 16: Final Reassembly
-
Peel off the protective film from the waterproof adhesive seal.
-
Reconnect the battery and screen, then install the protective bracket and tighten the screws.
-
Align the top edge of the screen with the top edge of the phone housing, then press down firmly along both sides.
-
Reinstall and tighten the two screws at the bottom.
