DIY iPhone Screen Replacement: Save Money with This Easy Repair Tutorial

LiaoTianna |

This guide will walk you through replacing the display assembly on an iPhone 13 Pro Max. Opening the phone will compromise its waterproof seals. Make sure to have a replacement adhesive ready before you begin, or your phone will lose its water resistance.

⚠️Critical Warnings & Preparation

  • Before you begin, discharge your iPhone battery below 25 %.
  • Power off the iPhone completely before disassembly.
  • If the rear glass is cracked, cover it with clear tape during repair to prevent further breakage and personal injury. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.

Phase 1: Opening the Screen

Step 1: Remove bottom screws

  • Remove the two 6.8 mm long pentalobe P2 screws at the bottom edge of the iPhone.

Step 2: Heat the edges

  • Use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat the bottom edge of the iPhone for about 1 minute until the rear glass feels slightly too hot to touch.

Step 3: create a small gap

1. Attach a suction cup to the bottom edge of the screen.

2. Pull up on the suction cup with constant, steady pressure to create a small gap between the front panel and the rear case.

Step 4: Separate adhesive along the edges

1. Insert an opening pick into the gap (apply more heat if the gap is difficult to open), and gently wiggle the screen up and down to weaken the adhesive.

2. Use a hair dryer to heat the edges of the iPhone, then slide the triangular opening pick to separate the glue (insert no more than 3 mm deep).

Note: Handle with care as there are fragile ribbon cables along the left edge.

Step 5: Open the screen

1. Remove the suction cup from the screen. Swing the display up from the right side, opening the iPhone like a book.

Note: Do not attempt to fully separate the display, as there are still fragile ribbon cables connected to the logic board.

2. Prop the screen up against a sturdy object (like a small box) to prevent straining the cables.

Phase 2: Removing the Screen

Step 6: Remove covers

1. Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove the three 1.3 mm screws from the battery connector cover.

2. Remove the battery connector cover.

3. Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove the two 1.1 mm screws from the front sensor connector cover.

4. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove one 1.5 mm and one 1.8 mm screw from the front sensor connector cover.

5. Remove the front sensor connector cover.

Step 7: Disconnect ribbon cables

1. Use a spudger or your fingernail to pry up the battery connector from its socket on the logic board, avoiding damage to the black silicone seal.

2. Bend the connector slightly away from the logic board to prevent accidental power contact.

3. Use the tip of a spudger to pry up the display ribbon cable connector vertically.

4. Use the tip of a spudger to disconnect the front sensor assembly ribbon cable connector.

Step 8: Remove the screen

  • The old screen assembly is now completely disconnected from the phone, and you can now fully remove it from the phone body.

Phase 3: Transferring the Front Sensor Assembly(if not pre-installed on the new screen)

Step 9: Remove the cover

1. Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove the three 1.4 mm screws securing the sensor assembly bracket.

2. Remove the front sensor assembly cover using tweezers or your fingers.

Step 10: Remove the front sensor assembly

1. Heat the top edge of the screen for two minutes (be careful not to overheat).

2. Use a spudger to separate the adhesive around the ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and microphone ribbon cable.

3. After separation, remove the front sensor assembly and transfer it to the new screen.

Phase 4: Reassembly and Testing

Step 11: Final check and testing

1. Before resealing, it is recommended to place the screen in position, connect it, and power on the phone to test whether the screen and other functions are working properly.

2. Be sure to disconnect the battery again after testing is complete.

Step 12: Clean and apply new adhesive

1. Use a spudger to remove the old adhesive residue from the phone frame.

2. Wipe the frame with a small amount of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol (above 90 percent) to remove remaining adhesive and ensure a clean surface.

3. Peel off the backing of the new display adhesive strip, align it precisely with the phone frame, and press it onto the frame.

Step 13: Install the screen

1. Follow the steps in reverse order to connect the screen and install the covers according to the tutorial.

2. Peel off the protective liner from the display adhesive, align the screen, and press it into place.

3. Install the two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the iPhone.
